Memorial to the 1866 battle [ Monument or Memorial ]

On July 3rd 1866, the second largest military engagement of the 19th century took place here, a battle between 220 000 Prussian troops and 215 000 Austrian.
The Prussian army was led by King Wilhelm I, and the Austrian forces by the General Benedek. More than 7 600 soldiers died in the bloody clash. After the Prussian victory, Austria was forced to sign a truce, and accept the terms of the German allies.
The memorial zone contains some 500 graves, memorials, a cemetery, a new look-out tower opened in 1999, a museum dedicated to the battle, a neo-Gothic ossuary and a memorial to the "Battery of the Dead".
