THE PUPPET THEATRE [ Theatre ]A two-storey oval building forming a left-hand upward spiral. The architects, Petr Hájek and Gabriela Minářová, have drawn on pre-functionalist individual modernism and continued in the typical local style of the period between the two World Wars. Commission: VOKD Ostrava a.s. Investor: City of Ostrava. Construction: from February 1998 to August 1999. Cost: CZK 289,394. The predominantly glass entrance provides a light and spacious atmosphere and views through into the foyer, while the stage demands complex technological solutions to layout, acoustics and lighting. Seating capacity: 199. Opening date: 24 September 1999; the first night performance was Strakonický dudák (The Piper of Strakonice) by the Czech 19th century dramatist J. K. Tyl.
Interesting features: fire sprinkler system pumping from underground tanks, puppet-making workshop, prop storage area, joiner's workshop, sewing workshop, fitting room. The second floor houses offices. In front of the theatre there are five sculptures of gigantic puppets: Punch, King, Queen, Angel and Devil, made of wood, metal and other materials and produced by the wood-carver Pavel Skorkovský in Tomáš Volkmer's studio. The entrance hall contains a painting of a starry sky full of fairy story characters, painted by Tomáš Volkmer. In every odd-numbered year (in late September and early October) the site hosts the Spectaculo Interesse festival, in which theatres from 9 countries participate. OPENING HOURS:
